The preparation begins!

Kindred Spirit is a Westerly Ocean 43 when we bought her from her one and only previous owner she was in immaculate condition. She had features that made us think she was originally fitted out for long distance sailing, water maker, radar, SSB radio etc. But all this equipment was fitted in 1999 so we decided to update and add a few extras of our own. Signing up for the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) in November  has encouraged us to ensure a high standard of safety equipment and preparation takes place.

Last year we updated the electronics to Raymarine with Navonics charts. We successfully used the equipment last summer but I am sure there are many features I am yet to discover!

We have bought a new North mainsail as the original was good but looking a little tired. We have not actually seen the sail yet but soon.

This years refit has been quite substantial and has seen us pull apart the inside of kindred spirit and drill holes through the hull and decks.

After many years and coats of antifouling we decided to have the bottom scraped back to bare hull. Andy Primmitt and team did a fabulous job and he then applied 5 coats of gel shield, 1 primer  and 3 coats of antifoul (Micron 2).

One of Geoff’s favorite new purchases is a new feathering propeller from Darglow.

With all our gear and gadgets generating electricity is essential for our trip. Therefore we have 4 methods of charging our 6 12v batteries. A diesel generator, 2 solar panels, a Rutland  1200 wind generator and of course the engine.

As most of our journeys will be 2 handed we have invested in a Hydrovane self steering system and named her Vera. We also have a Raymarine autohelm but this will only be used with the engine as she uses electricity.

Kindred Spirit has  hot and cold running water but with tanks that only carry 620 litres and some journeys that will take 3 weeks it seemed sensible to update the water maker to a 12v version. But we will still be limited to one shower per day.

As for the galley, for me it is pure luxury after race conditions in Auditrac. We have calor gas oven, 2 ring stove, fridge and a microwave oven ( only to be used during generator time!)

So she is starting to come together but we still have lots to complete before target departure in June 2017.IMG_3050

  1. She looks great. A fresh water shower a day sounds like luxury, our shower is normally a bucket of sea water over the head. At least there is no shortage of sea water for showering, and once you get down here the water is plenty warm enough…
